How does it all work?

The challenge

Contestants will be challenged to crimp 3 Cornish pasties as fast as they can in a crimp-off style competition. Two competitors will crimp at the same time and the fastest crimper will go through to the next round, with a total of 3 rounds, before the final.

Pasty discs of approx. 20cm diameter will be prepared for the contestants, complete with the filling ingredients placed ready on top. The filling and pastry will comply with the PGI specification for the Cornish Pasty and will be provided by the Cornish Pasty Association.

When signalled to start, the crimpers will take their first pasty and crimp until the third is finished.

Each completed pasty must be folded and crimped to one side in accordance with the PGI specification and must contain at least 18 full crimps. Each pasty must be finished neatly by tucking the tail/final crimp under or over. The 18 crimps can include the tail crimp.

Two timekeepers will record the times for each crimp off.

At the end of each heat, the pasties for each contestant will be adjudicated. Any pasties not completely finished or not crimped in accordance with the rules will be disqualified.

The World’s Fastest Crimper Contest will consist of a series of heats and a grand finale. The finalists will be the two crimpers recording the fastest times over the three heats.

In the event of a tied result in any of the heats or the final, the winner will be decided on the basis of the total number of discrete, individual and clearly visible crimps on all the pasties made by each contestant.

The pasties will be stored, prepared and handled in accordance with current food hygiene regulations, i.e. temperature controls and safe food handling practices.
