Registration is open for the eagerly-anticipated World Pasty Championships 2012 to be held at the Eden Project.
Entries for the March 3 contest to celebrate Cornwall’s most famous dish will be strictly limited so early registration is advised.
Competitors can either enter online by clicking here where full entry details are published, or by ringing the Eden Box Office on 01726 811972.
The inaugural World Pasty Championships are a chance for professional and amateur pasty makers in Cornwall, the rest of the UK and across the world to parade their wares.
Competitors can enter categories for the traditional Cornish pasty or open sections for other varieties.
The Championships are backed by the Cornish Pasty Association after it won European Union Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status for the Cornish pasty last year. It means only pasty makers based in Cornwall who make pasties in a traditional manner and follow a traditional recipe are able to label their products as Cornish pasties.
It will cost £10 to enter each category of the competition. This gives the competitor plus one other person free entry to Eden on Saturday, March 3.
As well as the contest a full programme of entertainment is being devised for the day.
Tony Trenerry, Senior Sous Chef at the Eden Project, said: “Since we announced the World Pasty Championships we’ve been getting some really exciting interest, not only from pasty-makers in this country but from as far afield as America and Australia. It just shows how the pasty has gone from this little corner of Great Britain to many far distant places across the globe.
“The World Pasty Championships are a way of bringing some of that fantastic tradition back in one place where the pasty originated. It’s an opportunity for both makers of the classic Cornish pasty but also the creators of more unusual pasties to come and parade their wares on this great stage.”
Cornwall and Devon residents who have already bought their Locals’ Annual Passes to get into Eden for a year can see the World Pasty Championships at no extra cost. Those who haven’t yet, have until February 10 to get their passes either by visiting the project or going to www.edenproject.com.
